The global price hikes, together with floods and crop damage from the 2007 hurricane season, prompted the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency to declare states of emergency in Haiti and several other Caribbean countries.
Haiti, located in the West Indies, occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola, about 1 1/2 hour flight from Miami. Haiti is the world’s oldest black republic and the second-oldest republic in the Western Hemisphere, after the United States. Sadly today Haiti is consider the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, One of the most disadvantaged countries in the developing world.
